Yellowstone Locations
We have broken down our list by 6 cities that frame the outside of Yellowstone National Park. If you are interested in staying in the park you can check the National Park website for information on the lodges and cabin rentals within the park. But note most of these do book up a year in advance – and internet/cell signal can be very limited. These 2022 property listings offer a large selection of great places to stay.
West Yellowstone, Montana
West Yellowstone is located in Montana and is one of the more popular places that people stay when visiting Yellowstone. From West Yellowstone you are close to Grand Prismatic and Old Faithful plus multiple other attractions so it is a good place to stay to access all of these.
West Yellowstone also has restaurants, hotels, attractions, and gift shops so it is a good home base during your trip.
Island Park, Idaho
Island Park is about 30 minutes from the West Yellowstone entrance. It is a beautiful area where you can see the Grand Tetons and definitely less busy compared to West Yellowstone.
From here your closest entrance to the park will be the West Yellowstone entrance.
Gardiner, Montana
Gardiner is located by the North Entrance of Yellowstone. From here you are close to Mammoth Hot Springs and the north part of Yellowstone. Gardiner also has restaurants, attractions (rafting on the Yellowstone River), grocery story, etc.
Red Lodge, Montana
Red Lodge is an awesome Mountain town that can be its own vacation destination. It is also close to the amazing Bear Tooth highway. Red Lodge is a bit further to Yellowstone but offers a scenic drive through the Bear Tooth’s to get there.
It brings you in at the Cooke City entrance and one of the first major attractions is Lamar Valley.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Another city that can be its own destination Jackson Hole, Wyoming is a skiing town that offers a variety of restaurants, stores, and activities (ride a tram to the top of the mountain!). It is also a great destination for visiting the Grand Tetons.
From here you would enter the South Entrance of Yellowstone and head to the West Thumb area.
Cody, Wyoming
This is the biggest city in the area. With a Walmart and a variety of other stores, restaurants, etc. However it is quite far from the city to actually get into Yellowstone – usually about 1 hour to the entrance.
Once in you would most likely head to the Lake area of Yellowstone.
